World of the Greeks – The Hellenic Musuem

If you know anything about me you will know that I love the Ancient Greek world. In fact my second sojourn overseas was none other than to Greece (it would have been my first, but we decided to have a weekend in Hong Kong just to get my brother used to heading overseas, and to also calm my Dad’s nerves in letting him out of the country). While I could write quite a bit on my adventures in Greece, I might leave that for another time (namely after I manage to get back there, though that won’t be any time soon) because this is actually a story about a little bit of Greece that has come to Melbourne. … More World of the Greeks – The Hellenic Musuem

Leafy Balmain

Balmain is one of those old inner city Sydney suburbs that I have never visited, so one of the things that I decided to do when I was in Sydney for a week was to rectify that. Okay, while the suburb isn’t serviced by any train, it is serviced by the ferries (though as a form of public transport they certainly aren’t the fastest – the Parramatta River Cat takes at least two hours to make its way from Circular Quay to the Parramatta Wharf). … More Leafy Balmain

A Drummoyne Detour

Well, the next day of my self-guided tour of Sydney was going to take me to Cockatoo Island and Balmain, however for some strange reason I decided that I would go and visit the suburbs of Woolwich and Drummoyne before I wandered around Cockatoo Island. That turned out to be a bit of a mistake because it landed up that I really didn’t have all that much time to take in all Cockatoo Island had to offer. However, I will leave that for my other post because this is about the detour that I decided to take beforehand. … More A Drummoyne Detour

Cockatoo Island – A Shipyard and a Prison

I have to say that I wasn’t all that sure what I would find here. All I knew is that was that Cockatoo Island was an island in the middle of Sydney Harbour at which the ferries stopped. For some reason I quite like islands – maybe it has something to do with them being difficult to get to, or rather that on an island you are effectively cut off from the rest of the world. … More Cockatoo Island – A Shipyard and a Prison

Hyde Park – A Morning Stroll

I’m not really all that sure if one could actually write an entire blog post on this not so little (but hardly big) park in the middle, or actually to one side, of the Sydney CBD. A part of it reminds me of pictures of Central Park in New York, though I would have to consider Hyde Park the baby brother (it is only surrounded by buildings on two sides – to the east you have the Domain, and the museum, and to the north you have a bunch of old buildings, which includes Parliament house. … More Hyde Park – A Morning Stroll

Good Old Hindley Street

Hindley Street has a bit of a reputation with the people of Adelaide – it is referred to by some as the ‘Entertainment District’ while by others as the cesspit of drunkenness and debauchery. It is one of those places that decent people tend to avoid at night because it is a magnet for many of the revellers of the city, and has the reputation to boot. It is also the street that young people with their first car tend to make a habit for driving slowly along its length, namely from King William Street to Morphett street (or vice versa), turning around, and then heading back again. … More Good Old Hindley Street

North Sydney – The Other Side of the Harbour

To be honest with you, other than what I wrote in a previous post there probably isn’t all that much to see over this side of the harbour. In fact, other that standing on the harbour shore at Bradfield Park and looking over to the city, or the odd harbour side trek, this side of the city could probably be left out of most itineraries. However, being the exploratory person that I am, I decided that a trip over here would be of interest. … More North Sydney – The Other Side of the Harbour

St Matthias – Paddington’s Church

I have a rather interesting relationship with St Matthias Anglican Church in that while I have only been here twice I actually have a few connections, namely the current and previous senior pastors. The reason for that is that both of them used to be pastors at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Adelaide, with one of them being both my youth pastor, and also the head of what was then the Evangelical Union (EU) at Adelaide University. … More St Matthias – Paddington’s Church

Bonding at Bondi

“Have you ever been there on a hot day?” was the answer I received from a Sydneysider when I asked him what the big deal about Bondi Beach was. Well, as you can see from the photo above that is what Bondi Beach is like when the weather is quite nice (though it wasn’t stinking hot) and while the multitude of kites were pretty cool, there was one thing that put me off this place – people. … More Bonding at Bondi
