Afternoon at the Rijksmuseum

Yeah, the Rijksmuseum is pretty big, but not as big as the Louve, namely because the Louve does happen to hold the record for being the world’s largest museum (though I am sure somebody is going to come along sooner or later and steal that title from it, most likely somebody in China). In fact, it pretty much took us an entire afternoon to explore, well, most of the place, though on the lower levels we pretty much breezed through, if only so we could get to the impressionists before the place closed. … More Afternoon at the Rijksmuseum

The Museum of Singapore

Honestly, why I though that a museum that had the name ‘The Singapore Museum’ would be a natural history museum is beyond me. One thing that I have discovered in my travels is that if you wander into a museum that has the name of the city that it is located in at the front (or at the end with the article ‘of’ between the name of the city and the word ‘museum’) then it is going to be about the city, not a building full of stuffed animals and dinosaur skeletons. … More The Museum of Singapore

Village of Azincourt

In a way there is probably not that much that would set Azincourt apart from the multitude of small villages scattered across the French countryside, and probably even less of a reason why anybody would take their time turning off their journey to pass through it (let along getting stuck behind a combine harvester), except for one thing – around six hundred years a lot of French blood was spilt on the fields thereabout. … More Village of Azincourt

Party in Amsterdam

There is a pretty good reason why I always seem to land up in Amsterdam, however as it turned out the only time I visited a coffeeshop this time was to see if they actually sold coffee. The answer was a short, and rather sharp, no and if I really wanted a coffee there was a Starbucks down the road. The thing is that since I’m in Amsterdam the last place that I wanted to visit to have a coffee was Starbucks – it’s sort of like living in Melbourne and drinking only Hudson’s coffee. … More Party in Amsterdam

Fort Denison – A Harbour Fortress

When people think of Sydney it is usually the Bridge, or the Opera House, that comes to mind, however the one thing that has always fascinated me with the place is the fortress that sits slap bang in the middle of the harbour. Okay, I have to admit that I usually don’t think about the fortress (and along with everybody else usually think about the Bridge or the Opera House, though the pubs at the Rocks also crop up occasionally) however everytime I land up here, particularly if I am standing on Bennalong point, I look out across the harbour and see this fortress and a part of me wanders how you actually get over there to have a look around. … More Fort Denison – A Harbour Fortress
